The immediate past State Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Effiong Etok, has cried out loudly to the news of some members of the party in the state, loyal to a former FCT Minister, Senator John James Akpan Udoedeghe, who reportedly declared support for candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party and Governor Udom Emmanuel, describing it as a non-surprising issue.
It would be recalled that Mr. Sunday Uyire, a former APC Chapter Chairman for Itu LGA alongside Etubom Andy and few others, had during a meeting reportedly held at Andy’s residence last Sunday, declared their supports to the 2019 aspirations of Hon. Dr. Henry Archibong and Mr. KufreAbasi Edidem
While Hon. Archibong is the Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, KufreAbasi Edidem, a former Council Chairman, is aspiring to represent Itu State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on the same PDP platform.
Reacting to the development, Dr. Etok, who is currently the Director-General, Akwa Ibom APC Foundation for Nsima Ekere, noted that much as he was not totally surprised by the anti-party activities of the said men, considering their political roots, it calls for question the intent and sincerity of some party stakeholders who were claiming to be undertaking reconciliation of some aggrieved party members.
Etok, popularly called Charles Taylor, who was responding to questions from our correspondent on the development said: “Since the matter occurred last Sunday as reported in the media, I have received calls from members of our great party from Itu because incidentally, we share the same federal constituency. But I must say that I am not totally surprised because when you look at the characters involved and their political roots, you have every reason to believe that they are capable of doing again the same thing they did in 2015”.
Speaking further, he said: “Recall that this is the same thing these same people did in 2015 which led to their suspension. The suspension was purportedly lifted in the eve of the last congress of the party without recourse to all known rules pertaining to such reinstatements.
“So it was unfortunate that nobody queried the intent and processes of the reconciliation because of certain political power play and interests. But I think it’s a lesson that they are on it again. I and some other right-thinking stakeholders of the party in the state, who were uncomfortable with the processes and the purported reinstatement, are vindicated today.
I can only advise the stakeholders and the Party to take instructive note of this as the general elections beckon. The party must be very careful of such persons even within the campaign structure. These ones that have openly expressed their intents are even better than those who may act as moles within the structure because of their present and future interests”.
