There is a growing disenchantment in Ikot Abasi and Mkpat Enen LGAs of Akwa Ibom State relative to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Chairman and the Gubernatorial candidate of the All progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Mr. Nsima Ekere as he continues to ignore and neglects them and in return, they have promised not to support his governorship bid. The youths and elders of the joint LGs made their position known over the weekend when they converged to register their vehement displeasure of what the called “wickedness and arrogance have no place in governance”

This position came in the wake of their failed numerous call for help as the bridge linking them to the outside world remains a deathtrap which has not only stalled and destabilized their economy but also taken a lot of lives.

In one of the mishap scenarios, a man carrying his market commodities including bags of cloths, oil jars and rice was trapped and subsequently fell into the river and all his articles submerged into water.

To know the gravity of the dreaded bridge which Nisma is treating with levity, Dominic Akpan said: The memory of losing a bag of garri to this bridge on my first trip to Essene market, will ever remain with me to the last day, however I try to put it behind me. The market, which was on the old Ete – Edemeya Road, opposite a primary was to us what Ariria market is to Abia, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Imo States. Unfortunately for the people of Edemaya and Annang people, they had to cross this bridge at Atan Ikpe to the market. As at that time, 1979, the East -West Road was not constructed.

An elder statesman in Ikot Abasi told Mega Times that every effort to meet with the NDDC director could not yield dividends rather, he retorted and bluffed off when a call was placed on him to discussed the issue.

“We wrote joint letters several times appealing to Nsima Ekere to come and replace this bridge since from the day he was the Deputy Governor and repeated the call as soon as he became the NDDC chairman. But all entreaties have fallen on deaf ears.

“Nsima even had the effrontery of insulting one of the chiefs when they called him on phones having failed to secure an appointment with the NDDC boss.

“Nsima Ekere is a terrible mistake in the NDDC and is going to be more than a terrible mistake should Akwa Ibom people make him to become a the governor” said Joshua Udobong a community leader in Mkpat Enin.

Mega Times learned that this bridge is  the only link between Ikot Akpasi and Mkpat Enin to the outside world but suffice it to say that it is under an age-long neglect. In 2010, the mouth-watery promise maker, Godswill Akpabio made a phantom promise to construct a modern day bridge to replace this dead-trap. What did he do about it? Nothing! And absolutely nothing. Today he is asking the people of Ikot Abasi and Mkpat Enin to vote Nsima Ekere who was his Deputy Governor and did nothing about this miasma.
